Flower Germination — Make or Break Rules

LIGHT REQUIRED

Surface sow (do not bury)

  • Do not cover with soil. Press seed to contact, then mist heavily.
  • Vermiculite is OK only as an ultra-thin moisture lid.
  • Pelleted seed: keep fully moist until coating dissolves.

DARKNESS REQUIRED

Cover to block light

  • Cover completely (soil or vermiculite) or seed may stay dormant.
  • Optional: dark cardboard lid until first sprouts show.
  • Remove cover immediately once germination starts.

COOL SOIL

Above 65°F = dormancy risk

  • Do not use heat mats for cool-soil crops.
  • Aim 50-65°F, keep evenly moist, and ventilate.
  • If chamber is warm, germinate outside the chamber.

Pro Tip:

If pelleted lisianthus dries even once, germination can crash. Keep dome on until sprout, then vent gradually.
